Stations of the Cross
Stations of the Cross, a devotion dating from the later Middle Ages when it was popularised by the Franciscans, is a series of 14 images depicting incidents in the last journey of Christ from Pilate's house to His entombment. Commonly represented in one of a number of different forms - pictures, carvings, etc - the images are usually arranged around the walls of a church.
As a devotion, it is popular during Lent and Passiontide, when each station is visited in turn, accompanied by the reciting of prayers and meditating on each event.
At Christ Church, the Stations of the Cross is a series of bronze relief sculptures lining the walls of the nave.
